HISTORY OF IRVINE
James Irvine, pioneer of California agriculture, bought out his partners, Flint, Bixby & Co., and became the sole owner of the Irvine Ranch. James Irvine Jr. inherited the ranch after his father's death in 1886 and transitioned it from cattle raising to crop. James Irvine Jr. added infrastructure, drilling wells and system used to develop the Irvine Ranch Water System. James Irvine Jr. wanted easier access by rail and in 1887, he headed the task of laying tracks by the San Bernardino and San Diego Railroad. Buildings were placed along the tracks to package the ranch's agricultural products. In the 1950's, the development continued as the lands were agricultural with sparsely. In the 1960's, the world famous I-405 was constructed and urbanization of the area officially started. Urbanization continued through the 20th century with commercial building dominating the project area, and by the 21st century, redevelopment was taking place becoming the master planned city of Irvine we admire today.
